Vampire Poetry: Of Angels and Demons

Of Angels and Demons

They met in the deppths of Dark Shadows.
The loner vampire and the maiden hallow

Soon their energies swayed as they did the dance

Unaware observers looked on, entranced.

An angel for a demon
(one the yin to the others' yang)

each giving in, within reason.

Angels’ soft flesh willing

To receive her devils’ firm fang.

And with bite
He entices

And tastes

Her innocent vices.

At night they convened under clandestine cloud
seeking each other via virtual shroud

(No alarms and no surprises)

As his dear angel gave in, to her demon’s devices.

But Alas! Alack! When day comes dawning
The sun rises and then dear demon seeks hiding

And Angel waits by the gates (of heaven? or hell?)

Only in due time will tell.

(Only at night, do Angels dance with Demons, by the pale moonlight.)

♫ Mr. Mojo Risin'♫ - In a 'Morrison' State-of-Mind

So for a few days last week, I was in a (Jim) Morrison state of mind. From posting pics of Jim on this blog's affiliate FaceBook page to reflecting on some of Jim's well known words of wisdom, which are still relevant today.

Although I was born some 7 or 8 years after Morrison had passed in 1971, he has no doubt influenced and continues to influence generations, and I can count myself among them.

Growing up, and even as recently as a few years ago, I had a poster or two of Jim and The Doors  on my bedroom walls, I own a couple albums and even T-shirts and a key chain or two. I've read of Jim's poetry and recently, back in April 2010, I went, even though slightly under the weather, to one of the selected screenings of 'When You're Strange'

Ultimately though, the biggest thing for me and an experience I will never forget (as it was one of the things on my list of "to do before I die") was when I got to visit Jim's grave in the Père Lachaise Cemetery back in the early 2000's.

It was there after and then after that I was inspired to make an attempt at writing my first novel. Began in 2004, and then re-vamped (no pun intended) in 2009. With currently three chapters in, it's a Work In Progress.

Below is an excerpt from the WIP, which already has a title, but of which I'll not be disclosing until the work is finished. And here is a poem that I was inspired to create using the titles of some of The Doors most known songs: Mr. Mojo Risin.

Excerpt from WIP which was originally titled 'Pursuit in Paris'

Taking a chance, she quickly ducked down a short path, and hurried to huddle herself between two tall grave stones. Slowly and quietly she inched her way as low as possible and waited. She waited for what seemed like an eternity. All was deathly calm and quiet around her. All she could really hear was her own heart beating loudly in her ears.

Suddenly, she felt herself being grabbed from behind and before she could muster a scream, a hand covered her mouth. She was brought up to a standing position, her back pressed solidly against what felt like a man’s chest. She breathed in deeply, her nostrils flaring above the hand that covered her mouth, and she smelled the scent of blood and aftershave.

Immediately she thought to struggle and try to break free, but her body was rendered immobile, as if in a straight jacket, held as it was, in a vise grip, by the arm across her torso. Unexpectedly her head was tilted firmly yet gently to one side and she felt his lips as they brushed against her ear as he murmured: “You’re not going to get away from me this time, Cherie.”

And then she felt it, the piercing pain as teeth met flesh, and he sunk his own into her neck.

What the fuck! He bit me!  - Then the realization sunk in, as sharp as his fangs. -  Bloody Hell …he really is a vampire!

For Josanne the sensation in the moment was intense. Fear and panic began to rise from deep within her, yet no sooner had she felt the penetrating pain than it was accompanied by an unfathomable wave of pleasure, instantly reminiscent of the fistt ime she had had sex.

To Josanne’s embarrassment an unwarranted moan escaped her lips. As she was about to drift into unconsciousness, succumbing to the incubus that fed on her, her eyes glanced over the gravestone that was just within range.

There it stood, that which she had been looking for. That which had brought her into the cemetery in the first place. In the pale glow of the pathway lights, the grey brown, tombstone marked James Douglas Morrison. 1943 – 1971.

And below, the words written in Greek, which she thought loosely translated to mean:
                                      The Devil Himself!

Happy Halloween 2010! ... And "Beautiful/Deadly" Poem.

Well it's that time of year again. October 31st. Also better know as Halloween (or All Saints' Eve).
The time of year when the veil between the living and the dead is believed to be at its thinnest, thus "allowing the spirits to pass through".

The time of year when human "ghouls" big or small go "trick-or-treating" for candy, other goodies and what not.

This year, Halloween falls on a Sunday, and won't ya know it. In this year, October has or "had" (as today is the last day of the month) 5 Sundays.
Yes five Sundays were in the month of October, and that only happens once every 823 years.

Talk about a "Zen October 2010".

So as we prepare to revel in costumed delight, and light candles in Jack 'o Lanterns and at grave sites. Here's to a Happily Haunting and  a Frighteningly Fang-tastic Halloween

And here's sharing a bit of my poetry to bite :[ ... LoL! I mean, to boot! ;)

Beautiful/Deadly
The scorpion stings,
Its nature true.
As is the cobra,
Bared fangs, no lying to you.

But Rose,
In all his beauty
Hides his weapons
Deadly!

Misconceptions and deceptions
All part of *The Crying Game
As this Rose hides his true intentions
Thorny secrets tear and maim.

Hearts and hands left bleeding by his lies
While deadly beauty shines in the sun.
And behind the closed doors of night?

Well, roses die with their weapons.

Vampire Henry Fitzroy's re-Birth-day... & actor Kyle Schmid's Birthday.

So today, Friday July 23rd, is somewhat of an auspicious day for those of us who are vampire fans. And more so, for those of us who are fans of a specific, Royal, blue blooded (albeit bastard) vampire Prince.

And whom might that vamp, du (ce) jour, be?

It's none other than vampire Henry Fitzroy.

Today marks the day when, thanks to the creative genius of author Tanya Huff, the real life persona of Henry Fitzroy, bastard son of King Henry VIII and 1st Duke of Richmond and Somerset, died, but was re-born into the world of Huff's Blood Books as, vampire.

Today is also the day when, in the zodiac, the sun enters Leo and will remain there until August 22nd. Leo is represented by the symbol of the proud lion, which in essence, it (the lion) is also a royal symbol. Noted among the traits of a Leo personality are: Loyalty, self-confidence, charisma.

And speaking of Leo's and vampires (and don't you just love a good segue? :)

The actor who embodied and breath life into the aforementioned vampire Henry Fitzroy on tv's Blood Ties also celebrates his own birthday under the zodiac sign of the Lion.

Yes Kyle Schmid is, as vampire Henry Fitzroy was, a Leo (albeit of the other month).

Kyle will be celebrating his birthday coming up on August 3rd and in anticipation of this, an e-card was put together for him, for his fans to sign and leave messages.
Said card can be signed> here.

His Blood Ties co-star, actress Christina Cox also celebrates her birthday under the sign of Leo. This "lioness" celebrates this month, on July 31st, and an e-card has also been created for her fans to leave messages for her. Her card can be signed> here.

True Blood: A Vampire Villanelle

So last week, I was given the assignment (in my poetry writing workshop) to write a Villanelle. (An example of which is the popular Dylan Thomas' Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night.)

Now mind you, I am (have always been) more of a free verse writing type poet. So as much as I may enjoy reading the occasional, traditional/ structured poetry, like, for example, Sonnets, I'm not much for writing them.
Nevertheless, I decided to take on the challenge of writing the Villanelle. And what a challenge it was... Until!

Until I decided to write on two of my favourite topics. Vampires, and more specifically True Blood.

And how apropos, because with season 3 almost upon us (with only 3 days left to go from today, June 10th), and as waiting has sucked to the point (of a fang) of wanting to "do bad things", here's hoping to God(ric) that the vampire villanelle helps sustain, even if only for a little bite... I mean bit! ;)

True Blood:  a Vampire Villanelle

True, it’s in the Blood and we know it all too well.
You don’t know how much is at stake!
'til Sunday, seeking solace in vampire Villanelle.

Season one was fangtastic, there was so much to tell.
How much more waiting does it take?
True
it’s in the Blood and we know it all too well.

On Bill, Eric and Sam, *Sookeeh seems to have cast a spell.
Waiting sucks! Don’t tempt a fans’ faith.
'til Sunday, seeking solace in vampire Villanelle.

Lafayette’s a charm. Baby vamp Jessica’s a thrill, hell
Almost all in Bon Temps are just about great.
True,
it’s in the Blood and we know it all too well.

Season two started strong. Close to the end it kinda fell.
Although, “I will Rise up” … the best episode to date.
'til Sunday, seeking solace in vampire Villanelle.

Season 3, soon we’ll see Alcide. So gravely we wait. We dwell.
HBO’s campaign? Bloody icing on the cake!
True,
it’s in the Blood and we know it all too well.
'til Sunday, seeking solace in vampire Villanelle.

* Sookie – as per the way vampire Bill pronounces it on the show - Sookeeh

Death Becomes HIM (and Poem featured)

Well, as it was announced yesterday, not even 24hrs ago as yet, that Sam Worthington is in talks to play Dracula in a film titled Dracula Year Zero.
This adds to the already growing number of actors who are associated with vampire or vampire related films, including Johnny Depp set to play Barnabas Collins in a Dark Shadows remake and Brad Pitt set to produce Vlad.

Soon, before you know it, everyone in Hollywood will have been "Vamped".

So it's with that fang-tastic idea in mind that I am posing the question to you my dear readers: Which actor (or actress if you will) would you like to see play a vampire, be it again or for the first time, in Tv or film?

And in celebration of All things Beautiful and Deadly, here are two fan made videos featuring actors who play(ed) vampires, and if I do say so myself, Death Becomes them both Beautifully indeed: It's Vampire Henry Fitzroy (as embodied by actor Kyle Schmid) in a fan vid set to the song Time of Dying by Three Days Grace.
And Vampire Damon Salvatore (as portrayed by actor Ian Somerhalder) in a fan vid set to the song Oh Death by Jen Titus.

Vampire Poetry: Vampire

This poem of mine was originally published on Fang-tastic Books in the Vampire Poetry Monday, this past Fall (October).

Vampire

Black winged cape descends
The Dark Incubus has come,
To feed.

Innocence of life, taken in blood,
Which sustains
his need.

Life absorbed
Into one that’s none.

Dark Dweller.
Sun Hater.
Blood Drinker.
Life Taker.
Grave Maker.

Vampire!

Fiend and foe.
But friend to those who know,
The life he can give in taking.

IMMORTALITY,
his making.

Vampire Poetry: My Life, My Love, My Blood

This poem of mine was originally published on Fang-tastic Books this past Summer (June).
But with Halloween coming soon, I thought it fitting to repost:

My Life, My Love, My Blood

Through my life, my love, my blood - You live.
Seeking the mortal, from immortality.
Claws tear at my skin,
Seeking the essence of life within.
And I, by choice, give in, to your sweet, subtle sin.

You live your lost life through my blood.
You, who have lived far beyond regular reality.
Akin to your own muse, am I.
And you shall weep those blood tears when I die,
As *Louis had wept for *Claudia.

My breasts bleed, nicked by your ferocious fangs.
As you seek the womb of my breeding being.
You know it will come, your senses have gleaned
And you will savour my secret spate to placate your pangs.

And in those moments of great despair
You will miss me when I am no longer there.
You will crave me, as the life you once loved,
The life you once had, the life that gave you blood.

*Characters from Anne Rice’s “The Vampire Chronicles”
