"True" it's in the "Blood" T-minus 13 to the 13/06/2010 @ 9pm

Right now it's 9:00pm (eastern)on June 1st ... Day number 13 is almost over. Then tomorrow, day number 12, and the day after that, number 11... Can you feel it? Can you hear it? Can you smell it? Can you see it? Can you taste it? The anticipation is growing. Hell it's been growing for some time now. Since season 2 ended last summer... and boy does Waiting. Ever. Suck.  

But thank God(ric) our thirst will soon be quenched, as by about this time on Sunday June 13th, we'll be "neck" deep, back into one of our favourite shows. If you haven't figured out by now... I'm talking about True Blood baby!

HBO, the clever "suckers" that they are, have been teasing us die hard TrueBie fan(g)s relentlessly with their True Blood promos: "In Production" (behind the scenes shots), and the "Drop of Blood" minisodes, and the collectible posters ( VILF anyone ;) .... I'm sure some fans are just about ready to vamp, or better yet "were" out on someone's as...terix!  And speaking of Weres, well, we'll all see Alcide as he enters the Bill, Sookie, Eric triangle.

In any case (of TruBlood) while we continue to wait and count the days, towards nine that night, here are some random TrueBlood Season 3 stuff for the necking, oops I mean "checking". Enjoy!

New Vampire themed Video: Can't Sleep

I'm liking the cinematographic visuals. It's beautiful with the black & blue theme against the snowy white!

Review of author Skyler White's "and Falling, Fly"

VampirePhile’s review of and Falling, Fly

I had the pleasure of reading Skyler White’s and Falling, Fly on an uninterrupted 10 hour train ride (5 hrs in each direction), and I was very glad I had had that time to delve into her world. And what an intriguing world it was.

Honestly and Falling, Fly is unlike any other vampire based genre novel I have read. A captivating concept of a world in which: “Every vampire is a fallen angel of desire, and we nourish our deathless beauty on what we fleeting inspire in mortals who live, but briefly.” (p.16).

A place where science, mythology and magic meet and create an interesting, thought provoking meld.

Skyler weaves a world that is, at the same time beautiful yet gritty, beginning in the first few chapters in America, then continuing across the Atlantic to Ireland in the hell that is L’Otel Mathillide.

Centering on the two complex protagonists, Olivia (the fallen angel of desire) and Dominic (the self medicating neuroscientist), and each ones quest for understanding, acceptance and freedom.

Dominic seeking to understand himself “mentally”: Is he crazy? Why does he have so many memories of lives previously lived? Can he erase these memories with the skills of science?

Olivia, is seeking to be understood “physically”, and once seen for what she really is (a fallen angel, now vampire) through eyes that are not blinded by her beauty, she can thereby gain her freedom from the trap of unfeeling mortal flesh.

I found that, and Falling, Fly put to question the notion of the superficiality of desire. Are we only considered desirable, if we meet the requirements of what is dictated or expected? And if one does not fit into it, are we thus damned, undesirable and unworthy?

Furthermore the language in which Skyler writes evokes a wonderful sense of lyric and poetry (that was not lost on this fellow poet). Her use of metaphor helps to drive the story along in the minds eye, conjuring images that add to the uniqueness of the novel. For example: “Tonight, I will hunt with Adam’s rage on ruined shoes, and I will feed full-tooth. Desire denied consumes.” (p.22)

As well, personally, I like Skyler’s approach with the points of view in the novel. Using the “I” point of view for the strong female persona of Olivia, yet not over shadowing (and giving equally to) the voice of the male protagonist Dominic.

To quote Julie Kenner (USA Today bestselling author): “Skyler White’s and Falling, Fly puts a unique and intelligent spin on the vampire legend… will have readers turning pages… and thinking about the book long after they’ve reached the end.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself.

Skyler White's and Falling, Fly makes for a provocative and intriguing debut, that takes you on an intellectual ride, that's well worth reading!

Bite Bits: Gabrielle Faust, Tanya Huff, Anne Rice & ... Kyle Schmid?

Gabrielle Faust (who can also be found on Twitter by the same name, re: Gabrielle Faust ), author of the Eternal Vigilance book series, is in the process of adapting a script, with acclaimed indie director Anthony Brownrigg, for the first novel in EV series. And a petition has been started to collect signatures to "show...enthusiasm for this creative project and prove to possible movie studio executives that there is a demand for this film to be made". Here is a link to the petition: Help Make Eternal Vigilance into a movie! 

The goal is to collect 500,000 siggy's by the end of 2010. And I for one, am in hope that they will be able to achieve this goal (hence why I've decided to dedicate a blog post about it).

As an avid, die hard vampire fan(g) girl, I would be lying (to myself and you) if I said that I didn't want to see more vamp fare out there.

I most certainly would. 

But that doesn't mean that just for the sake of making vampire film (or Tv series), it should be: come what may, or anything goes, be it good or bad!

Not at all!

But when something merits being explored, when it has the "chops" (pardon the pun), to potentially become something great (or even greater than it is), then one can only hope it be given the chance to do so.

I mean, when you think of it, there have been some (books-to-film) which have been given the chance to become more than what they are, but have left some of us, (of the more logic mind in my opinion), thinking; "Really? ... but it wasn't all that good!" ( insert obvious Twilight reference here)...

And just in case there is wonder as to what makes me qualified to critique what merits a good or bad piece of literature or film - well I cut my teeth on Dracula and Anne Rice novels at the early age of 12 and 13. Not to mention, at an even earlier age (6? 7?) on some classic films of varying genres, from Alfred Hitchcock and Orson Welles to silent films, musicals and foreign language...

But I digress!

So it's with a love for things that go "bite in the night" that I'm hoping and supporting that this book-to-film, gets to see the light of ... a studio set!

And yes, Gabrielle just happens to be a "HUGE" fan of actor Kyle Schmid (the embodiment of vampire Henry Fitzroy from tv's Blood Ties)... But that's beside the point!

And speaking of authors, the (former?) vampire queen B herself, Mrs. Anne Rice, has, for want of a better term, "taken notice" of actor Kyle Schmid (it all comes back to him in this blogpost doesn't it? LoL!).

Albeit it was mainly to comment on the visually aesthetic appeal of the young actor - as fans posted photos in response to her (Rice's) FaceBook post that day regarding, one Matt Bomer of the tv show White Collar . 

Rice (referring to Bomer) said (and I quote): "I just love Matt Bomer. It's so difficult to determine what makes beauty; poise, voice, demeanor, all this is part of the mystery along with killer blue eyes and gorgeous dark hair, and gorgeous facial bone structure."

To which a fan of hers (and Kyle's I presume) replied: "Hi Anne, that description of Mr. Bomer (re: beauty; poise, voice, demeanor, ... killer blue eyes and gorgeous dark hair, and gorgeous facial bone structure) is also closely reminiscent of another actor (albeit younger than the aforementioned). This is actor Kyle Schmid!"

The pic posted by said fan must have caught the authors eye, for she then took the time to comment on it. You can see her comment here on her FaceBook page!

So who knows, reliable sources tell me (i.e. someone who had emailed her and received a response) that although she had "never heard of Blood Ties", she will "check it out when she can."

So in this world of "never knows", we may just yet hear her comment on more than his "aesthetic appeal", but his damn fine acting chops as well! ;o)

Death Becomes HIM (and Poem featured)

Well, as it was announced yesterday, not even 24hrs ago as yet, that Sam Worthington is in talks to play Dracula in a film titled Dracula Year Zero.

This adds to the already growing number of actors who are associated with vampire or vampire related films, including Johnny Depp set to play Barnabas Collins in a Dark Shadows remake and Brad Pitt set to produce Vlad.

Soon, before you know it, everyone in Hollywood will have been "Vamped".

So it's with that fang-tastic idea in mind that I am posing the question to you my dear readers: Which actor (or actress if you will) would you like to see play a vampire, be it again or for the first time, in Tv or film?

And continuing in the vein of things, My poem Beautiful/ Deadly is featured today for Writer's Wednesdays on author Nicole Hadaway's blog All things Smart and Scary.

Author Nicole Hadaway guest post w/ Contest: "Why I Love Henry Fitzroy".

Today VampirePhile welcomes and has the pleasure of hosting author Nicole Hadaway as guest, along with a contest (from Nicole).

Nicole is the author of Release, which recently got four fangs via Fang-tastic Books blog review. And today, Nicole's post relates to one of the subjects which (to quote Nicole) was: " one of the the catalysts that spurred me on to write my own vampire novel."

Of course, Nicole was referring to one of her/my/our favourite vampire Tv shows: Blood Ties, which is still missed to this day by many (if not all) fans of the series.

So it is in that vein, (pardon the obvious pun), in which she writes today, one of the quintessential fave vampires of our time - as perfectly embodied by Kyle Schmid - none other, than, Henry Fitzroy.

Why I Love Henry Fitzroy

I lived in Europe for a year and therefore missed out on an entire season of American television. (This wasn’t always a bad thing ;-), but I did miss out on Moonlight. However, our cable system was wise enough to show Blood Ties, and that was when I fell in love.

I didn’t really read paranormal mysteries, preferring instead the more human kind, like Agatha Christie, P.D. James and Ruth Rendell. Yet I always enjoyed watching vampires on TV or in the movies – Fright Night, The Lost Boys, Angel and Buffy are among my faves, and my two all-time favorite television shows, Charmed and Xena:Warrior Princess certainly don’t skimp on the paranormal fantasy!

Now look, I’m a little old here – I actually saw The Lost Boys in the movie theater when it played back in 1987! I also saw Fright Night the year before, and the vampire in that movie was everything I thought a vampire should be: smooth, suave, handsome, cultured, well-mannered and confident.

Very much like Henry Fitzroy. I was so happy to see Henry as a well-mannered, cultured vampire who had a conscience but didn’t overdo it – he still played with his food, and made no apologies about preferring female humans (like -- where can I sign up to be on his dinner guest list? ;-). He didn’t abuse his feeding, though, and he was a great mix of a nice bad-boy.

Plus, Kyle Schmid did an amazing, just awesomely wonderful job as Henry. He is a really great actor and should really be in more movies. 

I know Soni is a member of Kyle Schmid Central so I can confess here that I rented and watched Joy Ride 2 and The Thaw just to see Kyle!
In recent years I’ve been a fan of historical fiction, so I really liked the idea that Henry was tied to the actual illegitimate son of Henry VIII, who supposedly died of tuberculosis. Very, very clever of Tanya Huff to have taken the tuberculosis symptoms (paleness, tiredness, shortness of breath and death) and put a vampiric spin on them!

After Blood Ties was mercilessly canceled, I had to get my Henry fix by reading the books (though admittedly I only read two of the Blood Series but all three of the Smoke Series which are really good and I highly recommend them). The books gave more details about Henry’s history, which got me thinking about my own vampire, Miranda.

Miranda had been in my mind for nearly 20 years at that point, but I never could come up with an original story for her. Not until I started thinking about her own history, and where she was during important historical events such as World War II. The more I thought about her during that time period, well, that was how Release was born.

So that’s why I love Henry: because he’s a great incarnation of the cultured, civilized vampire who’s got a bit of a bad-boy edge. Thinking about his own history was one of the catalysts that spurred me on to write my own vampire story, and I hope he would approve of Miranda as much as she admires him ;-)

Where have I been? / General Announcements / and All I want for Christmas is my “V” TV!

Where have I been? : Lost in “hyper” Space!

So just in case you were wondering (or even if you were not) as to where I  have been for the past several weeks  – having practically abandoned my blog updates of most things “vampiric” – Rest assured, some bloody good things are coming.

Nevertheless, the reason for my M.I.A is simple. I had temporarily become a Twitaholic and to a lesser extent, a FaceBook fiend! LoL!

Yes you read me right.

But it’s all related… to vampires of course!

Over the past couple weeks, after having created both a FaceBook page and a Twitter stream for this here blog. I had decided to explore both social sites further, getting a feel of the online community thereon, and especially those of the two most current newfangled (emphasis on “fang”) hit shows: True Blood and The Vampire Diaries.

At first I’d lurk about (like Edward in Bella’s room at night while she slept), reading the posts and discussions on the official TrueBlood HBO and CW Vampire Diaries FaceBook pages, as well as on their several Twitter counterpart, fan(g) pages: @TrueBloodHBO @TrueBloodNet @TrueBloodDotNet and  @CW_VampDiaries @tvdnews @tvdfansonline

And it wasn’t long before I too found myself joining in on both shows FaceBook discussions and Twitter tweets and re-tweets. As well as participating in the fun (but exhaustive) #FF :  *Follow Fridays and doing *Topic Trending!  (*that’s some Tweet speak for those not in the know).

So if you’re planning a hitchhike across the Twitter-verse to get your fave vampire show info fix, then the @forementioned are good places to start.

All I want for Christmas is my “V” TV:

To use (and pun upon) that famous phrase from MTV in the 1980’s: “I want my “V” TV!” 

And no, I’m NOT talking about that new series re-make “V” (The Visitors) on ABC . I’m talking “V” as in Vampires!

Vampires have risen once again – but then again for those of us, who are fans of the fanged, vampires never went away –  it’s just that it may seem to some that they are everywhere these days ( yup, they don’t just come out at night anymore) ; and especially more so in the last couple years!

Apart from The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which recently ripped apart the box office on its opening day (kinda like the way those werewolves ripped apart the vampire Laurent), we have also had, earlier this year (back in June) the much anticipated return of True Blood, season 2 on HBO and the debut (this past Fall) of The Vampire Diaries (based on the novels of L.J Smith) on the CW.

It was a bloody good Summer / Fall for all things fang-tastic.

Alas, now December is upon us.

We’ve already seen New Moon, like what, 2 or 3 times!  Both TV shows are on hiatus – The Vampire Diaries is set to return on the CW in January for the 2^nd half of its first season and True Blood is scheduled to return to HBO in June 2010, with Season 3 – and Day Breakers doesn’t hit theatres ‘til early 2010 either.

However, before we lie in the winter of our discontent and start shouting, batty in the belfry: “I’m mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore”, rest assured here are some recommendations of quick nip fixes for dealing with the vampire TV show hiatus withdrawals:

·        Beginning next week on December 14^th,  for five days, the CW will be re-airing the first 10 episodes of  The Vampire Diaries . That's five days, 10 episodes, 1 full week!

·        Starting December 28^th, catch True Blood season 1 on HBO. 3 episodes a night, 4 nights in a row.

·        For fans of Kyle Schmid or for those just curious to know about that vampire show I’m always tweet quoting about (and on which this blog was originally inspired… Henry Fitzroy anyone? ;o) – Blood Ties, season 1 and 2, is now available on DVD.
 

·        You think Eric and Damon are dangerously hot now? Well back then there was The Lost Boys. A classic that never dies and never grows old:  Need I say more?

·        And just for the neck of it: He was a grinch and a scrooge and a pet detective and yes, a vampire too (well almost), Jim Carrey in Once Bitten.

So season 2 of True Blood has now come to a close, and I'm sure some of you may be having major withdrawals ( can you say "Eric" any one??), having to wait for Season 3 to arrive and not 'til June 13th 2010 (rumored).

A fang-tastic weekend was had by all: True Blood (season 2) Review

(caution alert: True Blood spoilers within)

It was a vamp-tastic weekend between Friday, June 12th and Sunday, June 14th, as some (two or three in particular) of Canada's TV channels broadcasted several vampire related movies. Such as: The Lost Boys (and The Lost Boys 2: The Tribe), Queen of the Damned, Interview with the Vampire and more.
I could only assume that it was perhaps in celebration of the return of HBO’s TrueBlood that was set for return on Sunday, June 14th.
And what a return.

The show picked up where it had ended last season (1st), with the body in the back of the police car (Detective Bellefleur’s no less). Thankfully it turned out NOT to be that of Lafayette (and thank goodness to, as he, in my opinion is one of the better things about the show), but rather it was that (the body) of the voodoo lady, to whom Tara and her mom had been to see, to be exorcised of their demons. She was found with her chest agape and the most ghastly expression on her face (but I guess having your heart ripped out while still alive would do that to a person).

Tara is all in a panic, relieved at first that it's not Lafayette, but troubled nonetheless that it's still someone she knows. And of course she lies to the police about it. But with Sookie around, unintentionally hearing her thoughts, her lying is short lived.

Sookie goes to seek comfort in her fang-tastic boyfriend Bill, who is having issues of his own, training his new fledging female vamp, whom he was forced to turn as part of his punishment last season for killing one of his own kind, whilst saving Sookie’s life. Needless to say, when he finally tells Sookie about her, she doesn’t take it too well and decides to take some space from Bill.

On the other hand, Jason, Sookie’s (formerly??) sex addicted older brother, is found pining away over the lost of Amy: his “intentions-were-so-deceiving”, now deceased girlfriend of last season. He goes to repent and seek solace with the Fellowship of the Sun organisation. (I’m thinking, no hoping, despite his naiveté, that Jason will uncover something about the church that will provide for further conflict.)

Tara is still a member of the house hold of Maryann. And we are privy, via flashback, to shape shifter Sam’s connection to her. There is a mystery surrounding this woman (her identity and true intentions), which is not yet revealed. So this should make for some definite, continuing intrigue as the season progresses. (Personally, I’m going out on a limb here to say that I think she too is a shape shifter, but of a wholly larger breed than Sam’s mere dog. I’m thinking – Werewolf!?)

Meanwhile, the question still remains, where is Lafayette?
We discover him to be held chained and captive, along with several other people, in a squalid, dank, dark basement. He is as disoriented and as questioning as we are, as to: HOW did he get there? Since WHEN has he been there? WHERE is he? and furthermore WHY is he there?
My first speculation was that it may be the Fellowship of the Sun who has them captive. But that theory is soon dashed by the very end of this season 2 / episode 1 – when the captor(s) is / are revealed to be vampire(s) and more specifically the blond sheriff, Norse vamp himself – Eric Northman.

In conclusion, if this S2/E1 return is anything to go by, then I’d say we’re in for quite a ride in upcoming episodes.
